The trend to consolidation and adaptation in the Canadian agricultural sector continued between 2006 and 2011 as the number of census farms declined and many farms expanded and consolidated their operations. The 2011 Census of Agriculture showed a shift away from livestock-based farms to crop-based farms.

Greenhouse, sod and nursery industries, 2011

Sales of greenhouse, nursery and sod products in Canada rose 1.3% to nearly $3.3 billion in 2011. The increase was mostly the result of a 5.5% gain in sales of greenhouse vegetables and fruits, which reached $1.1 billion.

Canadian hog producers had 12.0 million hogs on their farms as of April 1, up 1.8% from the same date in 2011. This increase followed a 1.5% increase between April 1, 2010, and April 1, 2011.

Early intentions for planting in 2012 show increases in spring wheat and durum wheat compared with 2011, and a possible record acreage of canola. Indications are also that soybean acreage could reach a record high nationally. In the East, farmers anticipate seeding a record area of corn for grain.

Farm Product Price Index, February 2012

Prices farmers received for their commodities in February rose 3.4% from February 2011, as the increase in overall livestock and animal product prices more than offset lower crop prices. The total index has trended upwards since August 2010; however, there has been a continual slowdown of growth since October 2011. Single-digit increases were posted in December, January and February.
